    Cloudy tank

Let me clarify....I rinsed out the filter and bio media AFTER the tank was cloudy, so whatever is happening to the tank occurred before any exposure to the tap water. And even so, I shook out both filter and bio media so there shouldn't have been much water at all. I also treated the tank after...

    Cloudy tank

How in THE heck does an aquarium go from being perfectly clear one minute and within a matter of a couple hours goes cloudy?! My water parameters are good, virtually the same as they were yesterday. The only difference is I added 3 root tabs today. If they are the culprit, would they have this...

Starting back up after several year hiatus

Eww, don't want burnt plants. Thanks SO SO MUCH for all the help, Tifftastic! You're a wealth of info! I'm gonna see how we fare with the current set up. I'm gonna monitor the sword and see how the leaves do going back to a day/night schedule. And in the meantime, I'll do some...

Starting back up after several year hiatus

So, if I use (2) 25 watt twisty bulbs, for a grand total of 50 watts, you think that'll be ok or still too much?

Starting back up after several year hiatus

Ok, hairgrass gone :( Several of my shrimp are lined up under the Bacopa looking at me. I actually HAVE that hood you mentioned (the one where I would switch out the bulbs), it was what I had on the 10 before I bought the current hood. Are you talking about using the curly light bulbs or...

Starting back up after several year hiatus

So, you think I should just trash the hairgrass since it looks like it's on it's way anyway? And wait out the sword to see how it does? I thought that quad T5 system was a pretty good deal, I priced some doubles elsewhere (Petco, etc) and they were way more expensive. Too good to be true, you think?

Starting back up after several year hiatus

Or, I could save my money and get an LED system for the 55g and go with this for the 10g... http://www.aquatraders.com/20-inch-4x18W-T5-Aquarium-Light-Fixture-p/52302p.htm

Starting back up after several year hiatus

Ok, what if I cut my losses on the new hood and bought a glass canopy and went LED for this 10g tank, what size LED would I need? Aren't the wpg specs different with LED?

Starting back up after several year hiatus

I'll see if I have any luck in finding an 18" bulb that is more than 15 watts....so far, no dice.

Starting back up after several year hiatus

Nevermind the 32 watts thing, I misread, that is for the 48" bulb. Mine is 18". Need more time for .... ?

Starting back up after several year hiatus

I just looked....I've got a 15 watt bulb in there now. Highest wattage Aqueon has on their page for the Floramax bulb is 32 watts. That'd be over double what I have now. Thank that'd be ok?

Like how many watts? I won't risk hurting my shrimp, will I?

Starting back up after several year hiatus

Is there a different bulb I could use? The hood came with a full spectrum lightbulb.

Also, noticing a few of these little black spiky things only on my fern. Any idea what they are?

Starting back up after several year hiatus

I have a heck of a time trying to keep the hairgrass staying put in the gravel. It's popped out and floated to the top several times. I JUST bought a brand new hood for that tank and it only holds 1 bulb. What else could I do? I simply cannot afford a co2 system. I've been using API's co2...

Starting back up after several year hiatus

So my hairgrass is looking kind of sad... :-( The Bacopa, appears to be loving it's new home, though. My Java fern looks alright so far. And my sword, well, I can't tell what it's problem is...should I cut off the brown leaves or do you think it's dying? All in a 10g FW with shrimp only. I have...

    Thoughts/opinions on Fluval 306

I've got my 55g FW placed. 2 bags of EcoComplete spread out over a layer of medium sized polished gravel, so about 3 inches of substrate down total. And I have water in the tank. And that's it. Thinking about my next purchase....I think I've decided to go to the dark side and try a canister...

And so it begins....again after about a 4 year hiatus

Haha, yes, I most definitely DO have a budget. As for the 55g tank, I probably will get rid of (or at least put aside and use as an emergency backup) the two hood lights and get glass tops (I can't do open top, I have cats and I don't trust them). Like I said, the lights buzz and aren't in the...
