So I got my drill bit and bulkheads today!
I also started the DIY Styrofoam/ Quikcrete scape.

Well, I guess its coming along faster than anticipated...
Should have the filter tomorrow
Those are 3/4 thread x thread bulkheads, so a few pvc fittings and the overflow wall...
Gotta remember to get PFS!

Mock up and trim scape
Time to start trimming the scape base, and mocking it up in the tank. This should look decent with sand.
Dont know if you have ever seen the DIY aquarium background on youtube, but thats the inspiration for this scaping. Still gotta Quikcrete the styro though...
What do ya think? Seems like im missing something?

DIY durso standpipe w/strainer
I made this standpipe yesterday, and basically has only few pieces...
Thats it! This is not an actual real durso because it doesnt have the hole in the cap at the top.

looks good and i must say i like the fake rock formation, just a question but how are you going to keep the formations down also you planing and soaking it to leach out anything from the Quikcrete.

That's a neat idea on the overflow, surface and deep water filtration.
I'm no sump/wet/dry filter expert but in all my experimenting none of the stand pipes seem to work the way you want them and only the herbie method is thing i have found to give you a truly quiet sump. but you might not care about that.
Looks great either way! Keep posting the pictures.
