We're setting up a 90 gallon tank (my hubby, azaghalsei has posted a few times on the newbie forum) and we're planning on ordering the bulk of our live rock online since there's not much of a selection near us unless we want to pay $6-8 per pound.
I was looking on foster and smith and saltwaterfish.com and they both seem to be about the same price. We were planning on getting 2 45 pound boxes.

Thanks for the help!

In addition to that we also have another 20+ lbs of rock already cured and in use in a tank we plan to break down! :)

Thanks,
Az

I've found that most LFS have it for $7 a pound already cured, if you have it shipped, chances are you'll have to recure it, which I think is a headache. If you pay the same amount either way, I'd go for the cured stuff.

Is that just to save time, though? We've found that even after the heavy shipping, various online live rock offerings come into the range of ~$4-6 a pound.

It's a startup tank so the curing is fine with us taking place in the tank over a month if need be; is there another reason to avoid that and buy local for more?

Also does anyone have any suggestions on type? So far we are leaning to drs. foster and smith's select cured fiji premium ultra platinum gold plus or whatever it's called!

Thanks all,
Az

If it's that much cheaper, and you don't mind curing it, I'd order it also, since you aren't set up yet it wouldn't be that hard to cure it in the tank.

Try Tampa Bay Saltwater.

I've bought three times online. Two were from Fiji and they were very good. Once was from Tampa Bay aquacultured and it was the best for me. Lots of very vivid coralline colors and many different types of coral. Only problem I've heard about them and it's just rumour, but Mantis shrimp are supposed to be prevalent in the Tampa Bay Rock. I didn't have any trouble, though.

Within the last 2 months I bought some from 2 different places. I ordered this rock from this site:

http://www.livestockusa.org/TONGAEVA1.html

Pros-
-Nice customer service via telephone and e-mails/tracking
-Rock now in my tank and looks good and colorful
-Had free shipping for some reason (BIG pro)

Cons-
-Had to go to airport to pick up (although I knew this ahead of time)
-Shipping was delayed 2 separate times
-Don't know shipping charges until you pick up (although mine was free- see BIG pro :D)
-More die-off than I wanted, although nice rubble for the refugium
-Company seems a little disorganized
-If the rock is more than what you ordered, they'll charge you for that difference but will reimburse if it's less than what you ordered (knew this ahead of time as well)- but after numerous e-mails and time delays

About a week later, I ordered this from this site:

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=414

Pros-
-Ordered on a late Wed. night/Thurs. morning and received that same Friday
-...to my DOOR
-Didn't even need customer service- they did and sent exactly when their site said they would
-E-mails/tracking
-Rock was nice high quality- beautiful shelf pieces
-Not as much die-off
-Rock now in my tank and looks good

Cons-
None

Hope this helps- especially since I see you might order from Drs. Foster & Smith, where I had absolutely no problems.
