I'm sure this has been done and posted in the past but what the heck! I constructed a simple cave with PVC/CONDUIT pipe for my clown loaches. I decided to place the system under the gravel. The loaches love it and my bottom surface area is essentially unchanged. Simple and effective.

I want to make sure I see/understand it right, you basically just buried the tube in the gravel? And they go inside? I might have to try that, I bet some of my fish would like that :idea2:

Thats it. I placed rock at the base of each entrance to keep the gravel from falling in.

I did that for my liver cat using a peice of hamster tubing and it worked great! I wish I would have used the rock trick though thats pretty clever. one suggestion I would have though is make sure you take it out during gravel cleanings and empty it because mine became pretty built up with debris/bacteria from being in the gravel.

Or, you could just stick the siphon tube (no gravel vac on it) into the cave and suck up most of the gunk. Then you wouldn't need to dsiturb it too much.
Pretty cool idea!

i love clown loaches, they are one of my favorite. how big are they now? they do getg pretty big though, if they do get to big for the current cave are you gonna make them a bigger one?

They are approximatelt 4" each. This is thier second cave. The first one was a piece of fake driftwood that they got to fat for. I have had them about 18 months. I will have to eventually upgrade to a larger tank. I am glad they are slow growing.

That's an intersting idea. So far what I've done is buy small flat pieces of pertified wood and handbuilt a loach cave. The kuhlies really like it. You actually see more of them if they have a secure place to hide. Of course the clowns go in too. Nosey kids!

I think it is a neat idea and design! How much time do they spend in their cave? I guess my worry would be if something happened in there... I count my fish every time I look at my tank to make sure no one is having any problems and wouldn't be able to see my loaches if they were underground!
