Ok hey guys I am making an attempt at replanting all my tanks again and I forgot what's needed in order to do so..... so if anyone could remind me what is needed and what you would recommend for me to use it would be very much appreciated :)

What's needed kinda depends on what type of plants you want. Generally you need good plant specific lighting, a suitable substrate, a source of carbon and maybe minerals like iron, etc.

in the end, what's needed is patience. start off slow, and build from there as you master more knowledge and technique. what are the specs and inhabitants of the tank you plan to plant?

+1 on all said
we need to know what kind of tank you are looking for, and what your budget is! Low light, High Light, Ferts only/no ferts, Co2/no Co2, heavily planted, etc:)

Essentially, you need a decent substrate, decent lighting(plant bulbs preferred, not needed tho), and ferts or Co2 if it is above med lighting

Eco-Complete is a great substrate for any planted tank on a budget as it costs the same as a reg bag of gravel at $18 for 20lbs...petco has free shipping on 3 bags or more...

Catalina makes nice lighting fixtures for low-high light systems...also check out coralife single T5s or dual t5s

Ferts: Flourish excel is fine for low-med light tanks...you'd prob want dry ferts if ur going high tech

Co2: needed for high light systems or algae will grow out of control over your plants...helps plants greatly even in low-med systems; DIY is easy for tanks under 25G...

good luck

Flourish Excel is not a fertilizer. Flourish is a fertilizer. Flourish Excel is actually a liquid carbon source.

I would use a plant substrate like this, http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-sup...lack-20lb.html
Then I would get this light. http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-sup...-t5-strip.html

Then to make it easy, buy this plant package, http://www.aquariumplants.com/24_Pla..._p/ashll24.htm

Get a timer for your light, and leave it on for 7 or eight hours a day. This is all you really need for a nice, beginner, low light planted tank.

What size tank is it?

Excel is certainly a fertilizer. Anything thing that feeds plants, is considered a fertilizer.

BUT remember that Excel melts certain plants too. It has an algaecide in it.

Start from the basics. What size tank?? What kind of plants??

Once? Today, maybe. :flamed:

:D I may be correct more often than not, but if someone can give me a good reason to believe I'm incorrect, I'll happily concede. It could be argued that this is merely a difference of semantics, but since we're all really on the same page, there's no point. My point there was that dry ferts and Flourish Excel, while both assist in plant growth, go about it differently. Flourish and the DIY dry ferts are more or less the same thing, in that they add the other goodies.
