This sprout appeared in my tank about a week ago. It looks like a crypt to me, but I didn't know they reproduced like this; mine usually sends out runners.

For the record, I have crypts, chain swords (Sagittaria subulata, I think...), tiger lily, amazon swords, etc. I used to have an aponogeton bulb as well, if that helps...

I have attached a picture of the sprout. Sorry about the blurriness; it's really tiny (about 1" from leaf tip to root tip). Thanks in advance!

Not 100% sure, but looks like a crypt., but could be a Sag.

Def not an Apon, Sword, or Lily.

I vote crypt too but I've seen swords have a rhizome/bulb/crown-looking thing like that. Both are usually on older parts of a plant clump, did you move something from very nearby?

I did move a larger crypt a few weeks ago that was about 3-4" away from this plant. That crypt was a attached to another crypt via runner... Don't recall seeing flowers or anything. This sprout doesn't seem to be attached to any other plant.

I'm voting crypt as well. I've had crypts that have done this. I'm not sure how, but I've found little rhizomes that appear in the vicinity, but not attached to other crypts. Maybe they can also propagate vegatatively like a Hosta or a Peace Lilly (Spathaphyllium sp.) but they break off some how and get moved away from the mother plant because of in tank currents.

Just my educated guess

If you had a crypt in the same place but moved it that is definitely the same plant. I planted a crypt in a new tank but moved it a few days later and within a week I had 3 crypts sprouting in its place. I don't know what caused this but roots torn from the main plant can sometimes create new plants if in good conditions.

If the rhizome breaks and is large enough another plant will grow from it, looks like that's what happened.

Crypts can reproduce just like Vals via runners. I've had crypt runners go 10-12 inches or better in sand. Normally they only go 2-3 inches. I laid down a gravel surface on top of the sand to help keep these runners under control.
