Was at a fish shop earlier today, near Chinatown in Chicago, and they had an Arowna for sell for $50. Always thought these were illegal in the US. Not only did they have one for sell (it was about 7") but they also had posters of arwonas written in an Asian language (don't read any, but looked like Chinese, but maybe it was Viet.) and one of the employees had a Arowna tattoo on his arm. So is this legal, I'm half way tempted to get a LARGER tank to house one of these.

Silver and black aros aren't protected under CITES as they are not endangered. The Asian aros however are and therefore are banned in the US.

Heh, you must mean a much much larger tank. If that's a silver, he's got the potential to reach five feet. Three is a bit more realistic, but he's still going to be huge.

Its pronounced Arrow - Wanna, or Arowana.

Yeah, they get HUGE, saw one on TV that was at least 6 feet long!!

It was on some amazon show, and there was also a Pacu about 4' long.

Silver arowanas can, at the outside, manage to press 56" in length....a cousin, the Arapaima gigas, has been known to exceed 14'...likely what you saw on TV.

yeah in the wild maybe... I have never seen one over 4ft... usually the huge ones I see are around 3 feet.

I am sure there are some cases they get six feet... but definitely not the norm.

We got a silver aro in a 125 gal for the time being (its my roomates and its still small). Kind of a boring fish. They only chill right at the top of the tank. Rarely do they go any deeper, unless on the very odd occasion they may chase feederst that deep. They seem to strike fear into all the tank mates (both aros my friends have had seemed to do that). They just have that "look" to them lol.

meh... i prefer cichlids lol
