I have a 75g FOWLR and I'm in the market for one because my water in Tampa is really not that good for aquariums. I consider myself a RO for Dummies candidate. I see these systems for +/- $200 on eBay, etc. My question is.......are these systems portable or do you need to permanently connect these to your water supply? If they're portable, when purchasing these systems, do they come with the required connections to my pipes?

I would class them as portable...They, can of course be screwed and mounted permanently on the wall etc etc if you chose..Most do come with the required attachments which allow easy removal of the device..There is no specific parts that every RO unit comes with, so its always best to speak to the vendor to find out exactly whats packaged with the unit before you buy it..

I've used one of these now for 13 years.

There are several variations.
My suggestion is that you mount the whole thing under your kitchen sink. Do it neatly!

This system with the little included facet gets you RO water for use in your kitchen. You will find that RO water tastes great! You will cease drinking the muck that normally reaches your tap. My kids friends come across the street for the better water! Now your house mates will be able to enjoy a "fish" item. It's a good political move. Frankly I would not go without such a filter, even with no aquarium now.

It also provides three gallons of instantly available RO water for domestic emergencies or quick tank top offs.

I upgraded mine to a 90gal/day membrane and it really cranks out the water. This allows the classic 32gal garbage can water change fill, to take only a few hours to fill instead of days.

BTW membranes stay healthier the more they get used, so having people using it daily, helps them last. I get 5 years out out of my membranes before changing them. I attribute this to everyday 'makes' of water.

Okay now you have it running under the sink - people loving it. Back to the the tank.

I put a TEE in my under-sink system before the polishing filter,(for human drinking - aquarium doesn't require it), and then a little valve for safety/maintence. Then I ran a 1/4" hose under the house to the tank. At the tank I use a bunch of reducers to hook up an irrigation solenoid valve that has no metal in it. By controlling the electrical power to the valve I control the water to the tank. You could use whatever method you want.

I route the makeup hose into a 32g garbage can when I am going to do a water change. Couple of hours gets me the can full. Then I toss in a heater and some power heads. Run at least one power-head so it massively aerates the water to get the gasses balanced correctly.

Dink around with your salt mix over a few hours until the specific gravity is ON. And let the can mellow for a day or two. Line up the temperature.

Bring in another 32g garbage can. Siphon that can to the same level as the the fresh change batch. Ladle in the change water. Siphon out the bad water can. Done!

I know.. Too much info. :headshake2:
