why are they all so crazy? how do they hold up in the wild versus other fish? i'm thinking about switching to them becuase they are cool but it seems very difficult to figure out who can live with who
1. water chemistry (african needs higher ph)
2. tank size vs fish size (most american cichlids are big)
3. your preference...like big and aggressive, small and aggressive, big and a big softy, or small and calm.
Also, remember, there are many experience aquarist here who can answer your questions.
Just like MICKEY said once you get a few you will get hooked and you will look at other tropical fish as unimportant.
Cichlids are jsut so personable compared to other fish. i havent ever kept saltwater so i dont know about those but of freshwater i think it doesnt get any better than cichlids. many times you can have other fish in the tank too with cichlids depending on what size of tank you have and how much $$ your willing to spend.
Not all cichlids are crazy aggressive as one might think there are juat as many calm and semi aggressive ones as there are aggressive ones. it jsut depends on what you like and how much you are willing to spend.
i'm getting a 55 gal i mentioned in another post i like the firemouth cichlid, but i have angel fish as well - can you give me soem combo choices in their common names? lets say example 1 i keep the angels in the big tanki what other cichlids can i mix withthem - or option 2 i move the angels to another tank and get the firemouth what can i keep wih them, and how many firemouths woul i keep in a tank this size? thanks!!!
you could try smaller ones like rams or keyhole cichlids. largerones may work too. maybe some severums..i would think a firemouth would be worth a try as long as you get the firemouth young.
