Ugh! Clutz move on my part. I was setting the filter into the sink (deep "slop" sink) and I caught one of the latches (that hold the lid on) on the side of the sink. The latch popped off but no big deal, they're designed to come off. Except that I actually broke one of the "fingers" that holds the latch in place! Luckily, there is enough sticking out that it holds when the lid is on and the latch is down. How lucky for me! An excuse to get another filter that my wife can't dispute. I mean, she wouldn't want all that water in the carpet if it were to leak some day... :D

If you haven't replaced your filter, Big Als has a replacement canister listed under the "parts" section of the website. $39.99, I think.

Thanks for the sites. I knew both had parts, just saved me a step ;) BigAls is actually cheaper by $0.89 (I'm in the money...I'm in the money!) which might be offset by shipping, don't know, don't care.

I definitely need to get one though, just popped another finger off of a different side. This time, I didn't bump it on the sink, just unclipped the lid and saw the little piece pop off. Still holds the lid shut, thank God! I can forgive the first one, I broke it, but its been just over 2years since I bought this filter and IF the other "fingers" that hold the clips on start popping off (due to age?) then the filter will fall a few notches on my rating scale. I'll let everyone (that's interested) know.

Mine's less than six months old - I'd be very interested to know if it's going to start falling apart in the next few years! I hope your run of bad luck stops here - If they all break, I'd write to the company and tell them you got a lemon; hopefully they'll send you the part(s) free of charge.

A few months ago, I bought a complete Filstar xp1 canister just to salvage it for parts. I have 6 other Filstar canister filters running at the moment.

Yeah, I thought about just getting another (for parts) but being the holidays, $ a little scarce (o.k., it is most of the rest of the year too!). I did write A.P. and ask about just getting the canister. They sell the canister with the rubber foot and all four clips for $40. They also sell just the rubber foot or just the clips, but not just the canister. That was Saturday...I'll keep you posted...

Well, you could always pull the purchase new, swap and exchange as defective trick at a chain store(don't do this to a LFS!). While this is totally dishonest I believe the chainstore will be reimbursed by Rena. End result?, you get the part that shouldn't have broken in the first place, though you accidentally broke it, and Rena takes care of their customer. Kinda' like a reverse Doug Llewellyn! Dont take em' to court, you take the law into your own hands! (remember that? youngins, forget it) ;)

If it was me and I broke it, I'd just buy a new part when I got the $$. Definately e-mail them again "crying the blues" about your canister. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! (sorry) Who knows, maybe they'll hook you up for free! It wouldn't hurt to forget to tell them how it broke!...unless you've told them already.

:o
Well, I've prolonged this long enoug.
Replies from AP and BigAls was that they couldn't sell just the canister.
I say prolonged b/c I actually broke ANOTHER piece! Un-B-Leve-Able! I had it on the floor behind me (I know, bad place!), turned around and caught a clip with my leg. Of course it HAD to be one that wasn't broke already. So, 3 out of the 4 clips are now held on by 2 of the 3 "fingers". The clips still hold the lid on and seals it. I superglued the pcs back on but only one held so technically 2 of the 4 clips are held on by 2 of the 3 "finger". *sigh* How am I going to clean this thing AND stay away from it so I don't break it anymore???

Tax return, tax return, where art thou tax return?

broken basket clip

I also broke one of the basket clips in my filstar. It just snapped off, so I can't really close the basket like I should. It seems that this is a problem with these filters, they are just pretty fragile.
