I am new to this forum and would appreciate any advise that might be offered. I am in the process of setting up a 180gallon planted tank and I am trying to do it affordably and effectively. Has anyone assembled an adequate lighting set up completely from a hardware store or other retailer? This would include all components? If so, was it more affordable, has it been adequate and would you do it again? I have an oak hood with nothing else.
Thanks in advance for the advise.

I commonly use 4' shop lights above my 4' tanks. They only cost $10...

i Have a similar question. i'm tired of seeing those $150 dollar aquarium hoods for 75 gallon tanks. can the shop light hold the kind of planted lights that a normal hood would use? the bulbs are the same wattage and everything as normal 40 watt bulbs.

I not ony use shop lights, I use the same source Phillips 6700K tubes in them. That is however on the tank room tanks. Displays use Triton tubes. All of my setups are moderate light (2+/- W/gallon), none are high light.
