i think my little neons have white spot
what do i do
and where has it come from i didnt empty store water in with them
they have what looks like salt on tail fins maybe one or two spots on each fish and the fish that was hiding this morning has one on his fin too

will my neons take the high temperature of 86
and should i use whhite spot treatment or salt

am in process of fish cycle first fish in
 
i have done a waterchange and thorough gravel vac
and set the heater to 86

i have table salt
ingredients are salt,anticaking agents,magnesium carbonate,sodium hexacyanofferate

or white spot control by king british
ingredients are melachite green acriflavine and quinine sulphate

which do i go with salt or meds

or should i go get some aquarium salt

what will be less damaging to any progress on the cycle
 
Table salt will be just fine. I prefer raised temp (at least to 86) and salt--it's less harmful than many meds.

You'll need to do daily water changes--large ones--to reduce the ammonia and nitrites. Having these in there in any level is just going to further stress the fish and reduce their chances of surviving. Replace salt in the water you remove, and bring it up to temp before putting it back in the tank.

I will honestly say that they fish may not make it--neons are not hardy fish. The temp won't bother them, nor will the low salt level, but the cycling process tends to kill neons. More frequent water changes really will help.
 
I do the raised temp and salt method as well. I used the white spot treatment when I first started (OH did a water change without warming the water which of course stressed the fish :eek: ) and lost two fish. I didn't lose a fish when I did the salt treatment and raised temp treatment. And they were really lively!
 
thanks how much salt in 32 gallons is the correct amount and do i dissolve it before putting it in i have dropped the level a little read something about it being better for escaping gases and reoxegenating at the higher temperature
is this the right thing to do I have dropped the level about an inch

ammonia is 0 and so is nitrite nitrate was little high so did
25% water change

and am doing this daily until cycling has finished to be on safe side
am a stay at home mum so have time and kids to help out

have roped two eldest in to get a system of drain and fill and empty going on as a daily chore

i have also removed the carbon from filter and added an ultra fine particle remover filter in the hopes that it might catch any floating parasites is this the right thing to do

how much salt is correct amount to add
i have raised the temperature and the fish actually seem a lot happier than before more energetic
i have so far added in 3 separate times 32 teaspoons full (8 teaspoons full at a time) dissolved and dechlorinated

also as i water change do i replace any lost salt along with fresh water
 
1-3 teaspoon is the reccomendation I follow, and I usually go 2 teaspoon per gallon as a target and that gives me 1 teaspoon per gallon error margin either way. It's hard to tell from your past if you have added 96 teaspoons or 32 teaspoons. If you are already at 3+, I'd just back it down a little at the next water change, if not continue to slowly increase it. The heat will speed the life cycle and at 86* will stand a good chance of killing the ich as well. remember that ich cannot be killed while it is on your fish, so you are preparing now for when it can be killed. keep up treatment for a week after the last time you see spots on the fish. This will ensure that ich is eradicated.

As far as how it came in. it most likely came in on your fish, or if there were other fish in the tank, it may have already been there as well. Ich will live on the gills of otherwise healthy fish, and continue going through it's life cycle indefinately until fish get stressed and an utbreak is noticed. there are signs of it's existance but they are quite subtle most times. Once it is killed it won't be back unless you add it back in with new fish.

i have put in 32 teaspoons but gradually so as not to stress the fish too much

one died last night and i think there is another one dead but i cant find it

it is really disappointing as this is my first tank

i think they are all going to end up dying and then where do i go next
how long does ich live without any fish so how long before i can introduce fish again as i dont want to lose the cycle i have going

although if the worst happens i could do a fishless cycle cant i
