I was in Petsmart today checking out the fishies, and I came across a tank with "dwarf platys"? I've never heard of these! Is there such a thing? They were exactly the same in appearance as the other platys, but much, much smaller. There was no species profile tag by the price, so I don't know how big they're supposed to grow or anything.

No Endlers, no Pardise fish, no nothing me wants. :( They did have "glo light" tetras, which I quickly discovered were NOT glo light tetras like I thought. lol I just confused myself... I thought Glo Light tetras were Danios? Those are illegal in my state. The ones for sale were not those... Is there a species of tetra called a glo light? Petsmart trying to fool the consumer, again? Found the master test kit I need too- $23. Told Mom I want it for Christmas. :D

Never heard of Dwarf Platys. I am on my 3rd or 4th generation of Platys. The ones that are 10 months old are very small and not near the adult size. They are healthy and normal in all aspects except size. It is probably due to the fact that I never fed them several times daily. In hatcheries fry are supposedly fed many meals over the course of the day and the water is changed at least twice daily. My guess is you saw platy that someone traded in at the lfs.

I'm sorry, Scott, I don't understand what you mean by the above? :o

The platy you saw at petsmart could have been platy someone raised in their personal aquarium. If platy and other fry are not fed properly they can experience stunted growth. This is just a guess. Someone with more knowledge than me can probably help you more.

there are Glow Light Tetras and there are "GloFish " which are Zebra danios.

Pet stores love making up names for fish, so if you can't find it online, they're probably making it up because 1) they don't know or 2) they're trying to sell it as something exotic.

Glow Light Tetras are a naturally occuring species of Tetra from South America. GloFish are the controversial genetically modified Zebra Danio.

When I bought three platys at my lfs, the guy was showing me the different types. I remember him talking about the smaller version, they looked just like regular ones, except abou 1/4 the size. He said that some of them were over a year old, so they should have been full size. I just bought regular different colored ones and they are awesome.

they are different. we have "dwarf platy's" in many stores here in Oklahoma. sometimes I see them labeled as "coral platy". I am unsure what these are because they are not listed in any books that I have found. They are not deformed or stunted but an actual dwarf platy. they reach about 1" long fullgrown and are always orange that I've seen although some are darker than others. I'm actually trying to breed some right now in fact but they've only been in the tank for about a week and no fry yet. there are paradise fish everywhere around here. Several local clubmembers and I have endlers. If you want some, a friend of mine is selling quite a bit on aquabid and could send you some. email me if you're interested and I'll hook you up with him. my email is snakeskinnerkyle@yahoo.com As for the glo-lights. these are an actual species of tetra. The fish you are talking about are referred to as "glo-fish" and I believe are illegal in california. Kyle

Thank you, Analog Saint! I understand now. :) Having wanted some GloFish, I was probably just overly excited when I saw glo-something. :D

BigGuppy, I don't think that's what these were at all. They didn't just looked smaller, they WERE literally alot tinier. I didn't look extremely close, but I'm pretty sure I didn't see any arched backs.

Snakeskinner, the ones I saw were that rusty red color you see in regular platys. There might've been some orange little ones in there, too. I'm interested in possibly having some at some point, but I'm thinking I better wait to get any until I have a 10 gallon, that way if they're just babies or something and they DO get to normal size, I won't have overcrowded them in my 5 gal.! Thank you for the offer of the Endlers. :) My only problem with that is shipping costs an arm and a leg! If I'm going to pay that much, I think I'll buy some breeding pairs so I can keep them going! I remembered last night I have one more store to check for them. It's the only actual 'local fish shop' I know of here, so hopefully they'll have some! I'll let you know if I can't find any and would like to order some. Thanks much!

Thanks everyone!
