will plants survive in my 6 gallon with sand or gravel as my substrate? I dont fell like spending $20 on a big bag of flourite when i only need at most half the bag.

What are your tank's footprint dimensions? A 15lb. bag of Flourite will probably give you a 3 - 4" layer which is not all that deep. Or you could ask your LFS if he has a broken bag laying around and pick up maybe 10 - 12lbs. or so.
This clay based material is worlds better than most inert stuff you'll fine in LFSs.
You won't be sorry for laying out the extra dollars it will cost.

If you're bargain hunting(which I've been doing as I'm setting up a tank as well) check out http://www.bigalsonline ----> they have 15.4 lb bags of fluorite for $11.99, which was $3 cheaper than petwarehouse.com & azgardens.com. Hope this helps.
