Eclipse 5g in small town

Has anyone had any success using an Eclipse 5 gallon aquarium to create a planted aquarium? I am using the light which came with the set up. I have chosen low level light plants like Java fern and other which I forget the name. I brought the plants from back east. I now live on the west coast in an insolated town where I know there is not alot at the local hardware store. It would seem that this self containted unit would be difficult to alter in terms of lighting without tearing the whole thing down and getting rid of the filter. It has about an hour of sun light a day.

Oops! Looks like someone is asking the same question just a couple of posts down. I will go there for your suggestions
