I made some modifications to my AC500's.
I added spraybar driven bio-wheels, the spraybars are driven by a powerhead with a DIY pre-filter and has a UV sterelizer in-line. :dance

Does it make much more noise than a stock AC?

No,it actually slows and spreads out the water in the outflow, which means less splash.
Its is a relatively easy mod, but careful attention must be payed when drilling holes for the bearings, that the wheel and bearings are both level or the axle can bind in the bearings.
