How Many Fish in a 40 Gallon Tank?

I have a 40 gallon tank and was wondering how many Cichlids I can safely put in it? I am new to Cichlids & don't want to overstock my tank.

I was looking at getting a pair of Blue Rams & maybe some Electric Yellows. Is this pushing it or can I safely add more?

Any suggestions???

Blue rams and electric yellows are from very different areas (south/central america and africa to be exact) and require different diets and water chemistry.

I would choose either SA/CA or Africa, and then stock your tank around that. Have a look at some tank setups from different areas because they look very different. South america is riverine and usually planted, whereas African tanks are usually just sand and rocks with a high pH.

Let us know what you'd like and we will help you stock around that.

Well - I am glad I spoke up.

I would like to go with a planted tank so I think that puts me in the South America region. So any suggestions for a newbie to Cichlids would be welcome.

How can you tell if a cichlid is from South America or Africa? Is water chemistry the main difference?

Body type is different for the most part. You could get away with a pair of angels or dicus if you keep the tank up and the water changed. They are not the easiest fish. Convicts are okay and you may get away with more fish in the tank.

you could keep a single blood parrot as the main attraction (YEA!!!!) and a few rams or other dwarf cichlid to frolick about. Lots of plants and cool lights.....sounds like fun to me.
