im getting my tank drilled sometime this week when i have time.
is there any rule as to the placement of the holes for the return flow?
and how many is enough for a 29 gallon tank?

I guess the weasely answer is "it depends." I can't remember if you were planning on running the return through a SCWD or OceansMotions unit or some other wavemaker. If you're doing a SCWD, then having two on opposite corners would be one way to go. With an OceansMotions unit, you'll probably want at least 4 outlets.

yes im gonna use a scwd. all the glass places tell me that they wont go further than an inch away from the side. My question is about the placement of the holes. where exactly should they be?
thanks Dave

When I was using a SCWD on the nano, I had the outlets in opposite top corners, so it gave a nice back and forth movement. If you use threaded bulkheads, you could installa loc-line ball and socket, and add bits to direct the water anywhere you want.
