I second rainbows. i prefer threadfins.

as for pleco, i saw one on live aquaria called the rio-negro pleco and i think thats an awesome fish.

For a 55, I'd do

6 Hatchetfish
20 Furcata Rainbowfish (or a large group of schooling fish)
3 Honey Gouramies
2 Borellis (or add a few more)
10 Corydoras

You'd still have room

I think something along the lines of this stock would give you a pretty balanced tank...color, and activity.
