Very good topic there are tons of myths and legends about housing betta's of any gender together. I have always had great success with female betta tanks, though most were from my own breeding and so grew up together. I have experienced problems housing store bought ones together with my own but as was said earlier it's mostly a matter of their disposition. As soon as my new 30 cycles I will put up pics of my "Sorority". General rule I would say is no more than 3-5 per 10gl. Again watch them if your buying them and choose ones that tend not to be chasey or aggressive.
If you breed them as I have you have no choice really but to have a Betta sorority theres just too many to house separately.
