Currently in my 10 gallon, i have 1 peacock gudgeon; 1 guppy; 4 pencilfish. How much should i buy so i can sure enough survive??

I agree with Jm, it really depends. Even great LFS's run into back stock occasionally so I would expect some die-offs.
I'd get no more than seven. If they all make it you will be fully stocked. If one or two die you will still have enough to make a nice group.
Take a close look at the cardinals at the fish store. They should all have good color with no 'smudges' or signs of disease.
Then hope the employee nets them gently. They are easily stressed.
