went out today and bought the Fluval Edge pre filter sponge. I will let you know if it works better than the pantyhose material for my betta.

It will.
But it's very fine mesh and picks up a lot of small material very quickly, so it needs frequent rinsing for it to work effectively. I rinse mine every 2nd or 3rd day.
