Hmm, well I guess I will hope for the best with the tiger barbs and continue for with the water changes...

Go with the LFS media too, just don't add any new fish. Keep just the barbs in with the LFS media, watch params daily and dose a little on the heavy side with Prime when you refill after your water changes. Prime will convert ammonia to less harmful compounds (for a under a day).
