finally got my 75 gals

is 40 lbs of live sand enough for a 75gals? I'm going for a shallow sand bed of around a ½ half

That much sand would actually give you close to an inch of depth. If you want less, then try less.

I've got 40 lbs in my 75 gallon. I've got about 1/2 inch sand bed. How much rock you have will also affect how deep the sand will be!

Also, it's widely thought that buying live sand will be a waste of your money. Just buy aragonite sand and let your live rock do the job (your sand will eventually become "live")

I have 60lbs in my 75. Works out pretty good, decent depth. I would have rather gone with a bit deeper, maybe 90lbs.
