a variety of male aulonocara "peacocks"... get to around 5-6 inches, not sure if they would nip or not, they are one of the least aggressive african cichlids & really colorful... probably get a bit pricey since you'd probably have to buy them bigger so they dont get eaten.

I keep a crowntail betta with the most tantalizing fins ever with my rainbows and have had zero nipping issues.

Rainbows it may be, then, once I have a look at them. Would they be alright without plant covers? All I have in the tank is driftwood and rock decor at the bottom.

They prefer the open water anyways. :)

Yeah, I would also have to vote for rainbows. But also, if you want something out of the norm then maybe an african clawed frog.
