Today since I had a low pH in my cichlid tank I decided to get sand. (it's a 20 gallon with 3 two and a half
Inch Mbunas. I got them in September and it's been good since. I got the cichlids because i didn't know what I was doing then. The cichlids are happy. Currently the sand is still clearing up. The lady at the LFS told me to keep them in there. I never thought there would be so much poop under all the decorations!!!ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1334801497.109937.jpg

You will love it. I love the sand substrate in my 10g. It is easier to clean than the gravel in my large tank.

You'll have to post a pic when it clears up. Good job.

It was hard, an inexperienced 12 year old by himself on a substrate change, it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done with my fish. And while I was doing it I had an audience who was pressuring me:

Pretty Bearded Dragons!

Good for you for the substrate change. It's a challenge to change it out for anyone. Pffft. my 12 year old daughter can't even change the cat litter without drama, let alone substrate in a tank. Kudo's to you!

Good Job!

Kudos on the big change. I've been there, and it's always a major mess, plus the poor fish in cloudy water ... blech. But in the end, it's well worth it. You're going to LOVE the sand bed. (If you haven't yet, get some MTS to keep it stirred up.)

MTS = malyasian trumpet snails. They burrow through sand. They are live-bearing, and it only takes one so don't go crazy. You could add 2-3 to that tank and have a colony in no time. Lots of times people have them for super-cheap or free, plus shipping, in AC marketplace. Or ask at any real LFS. Chain stores generally don't have a clue about MTS.
