High Ammonia

Hi guys well the time has finally come and im about to dive into setting up my 55 gal tank this weekend. For now i only have a 12 gal setup and i plan on taking the fish from this tank to start the 55. My only problem is lately the Ammonia on my 12 gal tank will not go down. Im not sure if the tank isnt cycling correctly or whats the issue

Here are the tank specs

3 Small Tiger Barbs
2 Glass Shrimp
3 Minnow
(im aware these fish dont go together but these were free that i got from a friend that was moveing)


it may be overcrowded but i still had the Ammonia at zero before for weeks on end. Any insight

have you done a water change recently?

What kind of filtration do you have? Also, how often do you feed them? How long has the tank been cycling?

Do you have a liquid test kit?

Does your tap have ammonia in it?

Are you using a good conditioner that locks the ammonia up until the bacteria can consume it, like Prime?
