you may, over time notice that the tubing at and near the connection will also harden over time.

I agree with andy it's usually some transfer from the heat created by the pump.

No. Sometimes the tubing will come off the air pump, probably due to the heat expansion I suppose; I've had this once or twice. Keep the air pump itself in an open location though, as it can overheat if enclosed.
