How much danger are MTS to surface nesting anabantoids? I am debating sand substrate or if I can afford a bag of ecocomplete because I want to plant all my tanks except for certain betta breeding setups. I was going to put sparkling gourami and licorice gourami in planted 10 gallons for sure. Even eco complete is best stirred by MTS or similar in my experience.

I have MTS is almost all of my tanks, and while I don't take special measures for protecting or feeding fry, both the croaking gouramies and the redback paradise (both bubble nesters) have successfully added to population.

Here's a picture of the croaking gourami egg nest. They have leaves and such available, but prefer to just make a bubble nest in the root of the duckweed, in an area sheltered from the current.
