With one metal halide bulb, that would be enough to light 2 of the 3 feet tank length. So, you would end up with darker area's either side of centre. Personaly, i would go for a two bulb fixture to ensure even light distribution.

i have that fixture. i totally love it, but the ends of my tank are a little dark. my tank is a 30''' 29 gallon tank so if your tank is 3 feet i would suggest 2 fixtures. or you could use some small pc fixtures on the sides to compensate.
