I currently have glass lids on my tank with a 4' fluorescent light sitting on top. In order to do any real hands on maintenance, I have to remove the light and the glass panels, so I would like to build a hood that would allow me to open the tank for full access.
One concern of mine is not addressed in any DIY article I have read. It seems like the lighting and the hood itself will soon be ruined by the moisture from the tank if I remove the glass lids and expose them to splashing, condensation, and humidity. Do tanks with large wooden canopies still have glass panels over the water? If not, then how do you avoid water damage?
