Mutant Lobsters

You've probably seen blue crayfish, but have you seen blue lobsters? I took these pictures at the aquarium where I work, Maritime Gloucester's Sea Pocket Lab in Gloucester, MA. These are mutant American lobsters (Homarus americanus). Their genetics caused unusual coloration. All are highly rare. The green was may be an albino, and if so, it's an estimated 1 in 100 million. I'm not sure about the partially blue one, but it may as rare as 1 in 50 million. Fully blue lobsters, ranging from dark to light blue, are an estimated 1 in 2 million. All were donated by local lobstermen and lobster companies.

Pretty lobsters. My boyfriend's father is a lobsterman in Cushing Maine and once caught a half red half blue lobster. There are always a few blue lobsters on display at the Rockland Lobster Fest also.

There are also orange (like really orange) lobsters, and actually white lobsters (not faded normal). The "The mount desert Island Oceanarium", I think its called, in bar harbor maine has an example of them all.

And there are calicos. We end up with a strange colored one in the paper about once every 5 years. The usually get donated to Mystic Aquarium. There wer a couple that were so huge that age was estimated in excess of 100 years old.

Can you imagine what the market price would be on one of those at Red Lobster . Very cool! Do you know how they were caught? Typical lobster trap?
