just one of many, if you google DIY surface skimmer, you will get lots of ideas, and pics, i make mine with upside down aquaclear power heads, with clear under gravel filter tubing going above the surface, with holes drilled all over it. it takes some time to get it just right where water from the surface is flowing down into the filter, but once you get it, you will never want to go with out it. little heads up, make sure you put some type of floss or foam at the base of the pump to catch any debris or it will just make it back to the top

i followed uarujoey's youtube guide too! i thought it's a pretty neat DIY biofilter and since i had a medium sized bottle lying around in the kitchen, i made one too, with help from my hubs to drill the holes.. it's been running for half a year now and it's pretty great, IMO.. i didn't place a sponge on the bottle cap though, as i already have a mechanical filter in the tank.. i did make a 'cage' out of plastic netting to surround the cap bottom and to hold the whole thing in place.. so far, am really loving it to bits :woot:
