So has anyone here fishless cycled a 20 gallon? How much ammonia did you have to use the very first time to get it up to 5ppm?????

Its really different for everyone because the clear ammonia brand everyone uses is different and there is a different ammonia concentration in each. Just add a teaspoon, wait an hour, and test. Then, you should know how much more you will need.

On my 30g I was dosing a half teaspoon a day, then a quarter. Some people have mentioned counting drops, others say "Lots". Like NJD said, it will vary.

Try a smallish dose, wait ten minutes, see what happens. Repeat until you've got an idea of what you're looking at. Too little is better than too much -- you can always add more. If you go too high water changes are the only way to bring it back down.

This isn't rocket science. Close is ok, it doesn't need to be exact. Enough but not too much, keep an eye on it. It works.
