Yeah, walk in at night or in the morning and you will find a ton of dead fish stuck to the intakes for the filter. I remember petco or petsmart having some sort of really hard to feed eel.

That's the thing about Petco and Petsmart, really great fish in HORRIBLE conditions. Were they keeping the snowflakes in brackish or salt? My uncle has one that he kept in brackish for a while. Turned totally black in about an hour, went immediately into the full salt 125g and continues to thrive today. :)

****..

I know that both my local Petco and Petsmart's have dead fish alot..

actually.. lately though, only Petco has had on average at least 10 dead fish while I would go.. and that was mid day mostly..

My petco also just got in an Arowana* but the fish guy there that orders in all these "rare" fish usually already has them sold before they even get to the store.. lol like my rams, were a "petco special order" :D

Ugh, my local Petco is an ich farm, I can't trust any of their purchases. There was a poor puffer in there yesterday I wanted to rescue but I know I'd never be able to keep up with the conditions for it

PetSmart and Petco are the devil. I wanted some flash and color for my 40 gallon, but nothing too overly demanding, so I snagged some glolite tetras. I asked the "Aquatic Specialist" for 8... and she started to net pristellas.

Another time, a different employee told someone that ramshorn snails won't reproduce in their aquarium.

Although, as far as fish conditions, my local Animart is worse. They get in some COOL. AS. HECK. fish sometimes. Like woah. But they're all COVERED in ich. No matter how awesome a fish is I won't buy anything from there anymore. Every time I do, it's weeks of medicating my tank to get rid of all the various diseases.

The ich shows up due to the stress of shipping and not from poor conditions at a store most of the time. Shipping is the number one reason for dead fish you see. It is incredibly stressful for them. If they can survive a few days after arrival they stand a better chance of surviving. Putting them in the wrong type of water has no excuse.

whoa, i thought we had to replace the name of a large corporate store we are bashing with 'big box store' or something like that. i know that's been the rule here since i've been around.

it is sad that the big box stores sell fish that the customers rarely know anything about, and those fish suffer both in the store and during their usually short lives in a home tank. whenever i see the oscars on sale at the same time as discounted 10 and 20 gallon tanks at my local big box store, i cry a little inside.
