Gender: Female I can tell truly mature people filmed those. I think it’s sad when the highlight of someone’s day is watching a goldfish being torn apart, or have the urge to film and post it online.

Gender: Male You didn't film it, but you did post it here. In some ways it is interesting to watch how after a while the 3 piranhas seem to almost work together to corner the goldfish, but I doubt the people who did film it were interested in studying hunting patterns. If you don't want to be criticized for what you post, then don't post it.

Gender: Female The problem with posting that video here is that the majority of people here do not have predatory fish and prefer not to watch something suffer to death. There are better sites to post stuff like that.

Gender: Male I'm not sure if I understand the moral outrage here correctly.

Is it because someone filmed this?
Is it because people have predatory fish?

...

So far what I've seen, doesn't look any worse than what you
can see on the discovery channel at any time of the day.
And when I saw the headline piranha vs. goldfish, I kinda knew
what I was clicking on...

So what's the aggrevation about?

I had a piranah that size and i'd feed it the small sized goldfish. He'd simple inhale them ...

It reminds me when I first got the guy and tried feeding him a goldfish that was about the same size as him. He'd nip all the fins off before moving in for the kill.

Even God himself doesn't know what you just said.

Why's it so "sick" to film that? In the ocean, big fish with sharp teeth eat little fish that are tasty, all the time. And I can tell you firsthand, sometimes they even bite people. Deal with it.

Comparing whoever filmed that to Dahmer is really, really ignorant. Dahmer murdered people and then stored their bodies in acid vats in his apartment, and he stored severed heads in his refrigerator. Oh, and he was a cannibal. Sounds just like the kind of guy who would film piranhas eating a goldfish to me. Maybe every single cameraman for Animal Planet and The Discovery Channel all want to eat you as well. Gimme a break, shawn.

Gender: Male I have to agree with those that have said it.

this hunting, killing, consuming of a fish by predatory fish is natural.

some may not like that this was shown on a video.. and posted here but none the less this is simply the nature of predator animals.

btw, many of the fish we keep in aquaria are by nature, some level of predator.

those of us who keep cichlids should be well aware that many of the fish we keep ambush their prey. hence warnings of which species to keep with other species (eg: not recommended to keep neons(or oto's for that matter) with angels.

Gender: Female What bothers me about the video is not the fact that the pirahna are eating a goldfish, but that the goldfish is obviously too big for them to eat and is being picked apart one tiny bite at a time. The person who fed them this goldfish wasnt doing it to feed them, they were doing it for the thrill of watching something die a horrible painful death. If they were simply feeding the pirahna they wouldve picked much smaller goldies.

Posts: 341 I think the problem is adding a goldfish thats a little too big for the guys ...

Gender: Female I can tell truly mature people filmed those. I think it’s sad when the highlight of someone’s day is watching a goldfish being torn apart, or have the urge to film and post it online.

Posts: 341 I think the problem is adding a goldfish thats a little too big for the guys ...

The only thing that really bothered me about the video(s) was the choice of a goldfish as a feeeder. Cyprinids have thiaminase/vitamin b1 inhibitors, which can affect a fish's health and development. But as long as he properly quarantined the feeder fish beforehand, I don't see what the problem is? Most p keepers that I have talked to rarely even feed live food. I give mine live food only as a treat...and never goldies, but cichlids/ghost shrimp and gouramis once or twice.

Don't talk to me about research. I did a semester long case study on Dahmer in college. I know all too well what he did. Although I couldn't remember if he killed 15 or 17 people for some reason. My point is, this isn't the same thing. I was hoping you were just speaking out of emotion, but to continue to argue that it is the same makes you look extremely foolish and ignorant.

If this was all about torturing and killing an animal as you suggest, why spend all that time and money setting up, cycling and keeping a healthy piranha tank when you can just kill an animal yourself? Or better yet, just kill the piranhas! Why don't you do less research and simply think about what you say before you say it. Dahmer didn't waste time with all that fishkeeping mumbo jumbo. Serial killers don't have hobbies.

You have a brain in your skull. Use it.
A semester long case study must make you an expert.I couldnt imagine what your grade must have been?I think as a phsycholigist at the University of Cincinnati medical center I might know a little more about abnormal behavior than you.I have read several studies that shows a correlation between this behavior and serial killers. What school did you attend?Sorry that i have to finish your education in an aquarium web site,if i were you I would consider asking for a refund of tuition. You obviously didnt learn anything.Take care Shawn

If they were indeed what they claimed to be, and not a rube hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

This thread is sickening...I wouldn't know where to begin. However, not one of you has the right to dictate how other people should enjoy a hobby simply because you yourself take part in said hobby. The arguments based on assumptions of people who have obviously never taken the time to study fishes outside of the glass box would be comical if not for the vehemence behind the opinions.

Doh!

Yes, I do believe you're right. A legitimate psychologist would definitely know how to spell his title. In fact, I think that's a prerequisite to any job. You must have the intelligence to be able to spell what it is you do for a living. If a janitor spelled his title, janetter, he should be fired immediately and replaced with a new master of the custodial arts. Maybe Shawn is just so used to abbreviating it down to PhD, that he forgot how to spell the longhand version of it. :duh:
