So I found this assembly: http://www.homedepot.com/p/ViaVolt-...-Fluorescent-Grow-Light-Fixture-V21/203124380. It's only a single bulb though. Now where would I be PAR wise, with one t5HO vs. 2 T5NO?
That tube will almost certainly not be workable, but the fixture does give you a single T5 HO so if it fits into your existing hood, that is one problem solved. Then all you have to do is buy a decent tube. You mentioned the ZooMed UltraSun earlier, that is one that will work, in a T5 HO obviously. The Hagen Life-Glo is probably the single best tube. I don't know how much of a difference there is between these two.

The big issue I see is the lack of a reflector... The light will radiate put from the center of the tube anything not going where you want it to will be more or less list.

That is the beauty of the hagen fixture... The reflector is awesome. Like the ah supply power compact retrofits of old.

You really want as much of the light as possible going into the aquarium.

Well I have two hoods, one is from the tank, one from another. The one I currently have does not have reflectors only white to bounce the light the other does so I can use the other and paint it black to match the tank. That specific one also has the option of hooking another onto it if I ever decided I wanted more light and a co2 set up. That really won't be any time soon however, but the option is still there.
