i personally think that 'cleaner' is a variable based solely upon tank maintenance.

Not exactly. Sand keeps debris on top instead of trapping it the way any course substrate will (the courser the substrate the more debris that will be trapped). In addition, if you have enough flow the debris will keep moving until the filters grab it. I do not have to vacuum at all any more because there is simply nothing to be vacuumed. Very different from gravel and the difference is a lot more than how much I am doing, I actually have less to do.
