I love my school of Black Ruby Barbs. They are very pretty fish and are very active. I have mine in a planted tank and have not had a problem. You could also do some sailfin mollies, three spot gouramis, hatchet fish or angelfish.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Most species mentioned are tetras, i agree they are a beautiful fish but i was looking for a less common species that will work with my bichirs. Im thinking about discus but WOW are they expensive.Looks like i need to go shopping around:grinyes:. Road trip :headbang2:

Did you have any type of behavior in mind? Do you want small schooling fish or just a couple larger fish? Any species that you liked the look of?

So Cal
for a rare semi-schooling, mostly upper level fish, perhaps Poecilia parae if you can find them. (look like typical guppieish females, but there are 5 totally distinct Y-linked male phenotypes. see

for something a little larger and easier to acquire, how about US native fish, which for the most part hide in plants but otherwise leave them alone? in the upper level you could try schooling fish like bluefin killi's or the various colored top minnows / shiners (e.g. the redfin), and for the bottom one or more of the highly colored darters.

you can browse many of the latter on the bottom of this page:

Rainbow fish?

Plenty of variety amongst the various species to find a color you like...much larger than tetra but not so big that you couldn't have a nice school.

Like he said, silver dollars will even eat anubias and java fern...

I'd go with a school of mixed rainbows. Sounds like you have some somewhat predatory fish in there but the rainbows should be large enough to keep away. Make sure you get a female or two of each variety so the males will display.

If you want size, color, and a schooling fish I would say Congo Tetra deserve a look even though you've ruled out all Tetra's I don't see them being all that common especially at their prices, at least not around here.

I'm hoping a picture will sway you otherwise, granted mine are now a lot larger than they were in this picture they are about 3.5"
