I just went by the LFS and got a hydrometer and 150 gallons worth of sea salt. (I got the type in a bucket) I will be ordering test kits on amazon later.

Take the hydrometer to your LFS (or anywhere someone has a refractometer) and see how they compare. Once you know the difference between the 2 instruments, make the same adjustment when you mix your salt using the hydrometer. Watch for bubbles accumulating on the swing arm and always measure 2 to 3 times before you add mixed water. Hydrometers tend to do better after they have been used for a while (ie, after they slime up a bit).

Here is an idea to make money to fund your hobby: get certified as a youth soccer referee and start working some games. There won't be much work until the fall but you'll have plenty of time to get the requirements out of the way.
