Yeah I am still thinking what where they teaching me in High School that I dont know some of those simple things as Phat vs. Fat?

in the diagram, whats preventing the sand from continuing its ascent with the bubbles?

Nothing is preventing the sand from continuing the ascent. That is a problem I found when initally setting it up. If the power of the air pump is to strong it will shoot water and sand from the top of the pipe. In hindsight, a water pump may fix this problem but I am not sure.

that is seriously the coolest looking aquarium i have ever seen in my life. it doesn't even look real; it's more like a painting. thanks for sharing that. a corner waterfall in a long tank, with a whole lot of ground cover like dwarf baby tears would be pretty sweet as well, imo.
