Do fish or reef need zinc?

I have an idea-I have an old bottle of suppliments that contain calcium 1000mg, magnesium 600 mg amd zinc 50 mg.

also is silicon (dioxide) 20 mg and boron(citrate) 100 mg.

I was reading about corals, but did not read anything about zinc in an aquarium. All the rest of the stuff can be acceptable best I can tell, but to what amounts.

I'm thinking that if the tank can handle zinc to use them there. A little bit at a time.

This is food grade suppliment so it is bound to be better than most others right?

So how would zinc effect the tank?

As long as your using a good quality salt mix, there should be no need to be adding trace elements besides the common ones like calcium, alk etc etc..even then, they are mainly only used when hard corals are in the tank..

I was reading over at http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php and they talk of the coral, ph alkalinity etc.

I saw no mention of zinc and how it will affect marine life. I have done internet search on zinc marine aquaria and cannot find any information on zinc as it applies to marine aquaria.

Will the zinc hurt anything in a marine tank?

Zinc is a trace element and is apparent in the marine aquaria and is used by corals. Again, a good quality salt mix will replenish these trace elements for you so it removes the need to dose..
