Well i can honestly say, hand on heart, that I have no secrets! I use an AquaOne CF1000 external filter. I also have a sponge filter in there. The tank temp is 86 degrees. I do a partial water change maybe every two weeks. The PH is 6.5. It is a planted tank, which they appear to love, always in and out of the Amazon swords. I have Malaysian Trumpet snails in there for my clean up crew. I don't use RO. I don't do anything special. I wormed them about a month ago, andthats about it. I have said what I feed them and can't think of anything else!

When I set the tank up, I wanted to try to re-create their natural Amazonian habitat, using a sand substrate, using native plants and making sure thet the PH was correct, even if it meant having a black water tank(the colour is like cold tea!). I use a twin bulb lighting unit (mainly for plant growth) and have moonlight bulbs for night time.

I have been keeping Discus since the very start of my fish keeping time, and yes, I have had a couple of fatalities. I get the odd spot of swimbladder problem, but use Interpet Swimbladder treatment as soon as i spot it and this does the trick.

My larger fish are very shy, with the smaller ones being first to the food. I have a very good friend who used to run a LFS and when I have panicked about water conditions ( cloudy, etc) he told me just to leave it and it will settle down. He has been right every time I have needed advice, Thanks Sean!

All I can say is don't fuss them too much. My tank pretty much has a perfect cycle and I rarely have to do anything with it.

The ones in the breeding tank have started to show signs of lurrvve and I will keep you posted(with pics) of any fry.

Hope I have helped!

Waiting for the fry pics!

I keep mine in a planted tank to..but I plan on reducing the light to 1.5-2 wpg(it's a 75) and keep the pressurized CO2.
many of the plants will do fine with a lower light set up with co2.
