An Eheim 2213 is not self priming, so does that mean it won't start after the power comes back on after a power outage?

I believe the primimg is needed only after you have taken it down for cleaning and you are setting it back up. Provided the suction and discharge lines stay covered with water, there shouldn't be an issue of restarting after a power loss.

First time you have to suck on the output to get water into the tubes. If the power goes out you lose only about 5-6 inches at the bend of the output and it should self prime.

You should have no problem with start-up. The problem comes with a long power-outage because the filter bacteria may die and this can pollute the aquarium plus knocking the cycle completely out.
During a long power outage it's best to disconnect the filter and remove the lid so oxygen can get into it. Once power comes back on put it back together and plug back in. You probably will have to prime it then though.
Short outages are no problem.

Martin.

I have the eheim classic 2215 running on several of my tanks and after a power outage no matter how long it lasts for, there is never a problem with them restarting.

So what could cause it not to have any water in the lines? A leak?

As long as they do not lose siphon they will start right back up.

What would possibly cause such a siphon?

Thanks Marinemom.

To make sure that we're talking about one and the same thing; what I mean is will it always start automattically? The manual part I don't care about, I just want to make sure if I'm not there with it will automatically start pumping water when the power comes back on.

Mine have always started right back up and they have been running on these tanks for more then four years now. They started back up with no problems even when I was on vacation in the Carribean Islands last year. I had someone coming in to check on my bird and all of my tanks. I am so comfortable with them starting that if we have a power outage in the middle of the night, I rarely get up to check these filters to see if they are back up and running properly. They have to date been fine.My AC on the other hand is another story. When I was on vacation it did not kick back on and I had to tell my person checking on things what to do to get the AC going again. Go figure!
