added snail from reef yesterday now mia?

well couple questions, I went snorkeling at reef near fort pierce florida. I found a snail in a conch style shell about 4-5 inches long and 2.5 inches tall, and some plants. well today we can't find the snail could it be in the sand? And should I have treated him and the plants before putting in tank?
Only had tank for a month please be kind as I somehow feel I shouldn't have put something in from the Atlantic; but than were does the stuff in my fish store come from?! :confused:
 
ehhhhhhh harsh ...definately definately shouldnt have put em directly into the tank....taking stuff like that could have diseases and parasties etc, most things that come from the ocean if not tank raised are picked out for diseases and stuff so u dont get bad ones and even then some still have issues....um but yes the snail is probably hiding somwhere i didnt see my hermits for days....i wish the best of luck and id prolly put everything in qt for a while at least if id put it in at all
 
what is in the qt tank any "treatment" or is it just an observation tank?
 
New fish coming in, observation tank unless they become sick, then treatment. Existing fish it would only be used as a treatment tank. You also probably would not want to mix incoming fish with existing fish if they are in the hospital.
 
well thanks for the info the snal is pretty big and still no sighns of him.
how do you get a picture under your user name? And how do you get your tank specs as a sighnature
 
My florida fighting conch buries itself a little bit during the day and comes out to forage at night.

Not sure if you have a fishing license but you might get fined for taking stuff from the ocean in many places.

Go into User CP on the top menu, then a menu on the left will appear, click edit signature.
 
Yeah he's probably in the sand. I'd leave him alone though, he's probably stressed. You might also not make it a habit to add things you find in the ocean. You may bring home something that eats everything you have one day.

i have heard that before as well...something like snail might NOT be a big deal but its still a living creature from the ocean but something like fish definately would be. its all over the net about people taking things from the ocean andlots of people saying dont for legal and personal reasons but the diseases it could carry definately outweigh the advantages that u get from it...and also like i said before when companys pick fish out of the ocean 1 they are only aloud to get so many so the species dosent die out, they are selected for quality and size, and they are starting to work on having more tank raised species because everything in this world has a reason just like that snail...now 1 more section of algea will grow and that snail wont b there to help control it...while one snail is nothing compared to the billions out there but if every person in this hobby gets one or two the species dies off etc....not to put u down just expressing my feelings...but i hope u find him and everything goes well:)
 
There was a post over at RC where a guy was taking photos of zoas he found off the coast of corals. He was only taking photos and it was a good thing because the last photo he posted was of the fish and game warden boat and the officers questioning him. :headshake2:
