A few days ago I noticed my betta had developed a huge swelling in his belly. I've had him about a year and its an established tank. He seems fine-swimming and eating normally. Water chemistry is fine with a no ammonia or nitrite. 20 nitrate so I did a partial water change. Have had a bit of a problem with brown algae lately. Could I be feeding him too much? He gets 3 hikari baby pellets daily. Any ideas?

Ditto.

I'd even not feed him for a few days. Bettas are hardy and can go very long without food! I'd say fast him for a few days maybe 4 days and watch carefully!

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm hoping he's just getting chubby. I gave him a bit of cooked pea thinking he might be constipated. I'll try fasting him a day or two and see if the bloat lessens. Wish us luck!

You should look on this website, I was looking for dropsy pictures last night and came across this. They have good pictures for referance- http://www.fishjunkies.com/Diseases/dropsy.php

I was looking for dropsy last night was concerned about my Danio, but danio I think she just has eggs. I was concerned for her because she's smaller then the other two danios. But I don't think she's dropsy or swim bladder.

my swordtail just died. she had a funny looking stomach, and several hours later her insides were spilling out of a hole. but i'm sure it's not the same for your betta.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the tip. I checked out the photos on the website and I must say, the betta picture looked quite similar. I will go to LFS and see if I can get something to treat dropsy. Hopefully it is not too late!

I'm sorry for your swordtail. That must have been traumatic for you. I certainly hope my betta keeps his insides inside.
