what would look beautiful in a 44 gallon tank (that's what you got, right?) is two full schools of smaller fish , complimented by a few individual and attractive fish. You could get a school of Neon Dwarf Rainbow fish (praecox rainbows) beautiful fish get 6-8, and a school tetra's, get more than 6, somewhere between 8 and 12(take your pick, they are all pretty good though the serpaes and skirt tetras can be aggressive) you could top it off with a pair of pearl gouramis (male and female), two male endlers, four female, and a school of corydoras.
An active, colorful tank that is very pleasing and relaxing. Keep the PH at about 7ish and they will all do fine.
