Are you emotionally attatched to your fish?

In other words, do you love your fish? I haven't really become too attached to them yet, as most of them are so new to me. Also, I have trouble telling the ones I have in groups apart. I like my betta a lot, but I haven't really become emotionally attached to him. I mean I'll be very sad the day he dies, but I don't really rush out of bed to greet him in the morning. To be honest I don't think fish are too much of the kind of "loving pet" compared to a bird or a dog.

I have 6 tanks and while I do my best to keep them healthy I'm not going to shed a tear over a fish dying or even the entire tank dying.

I spent over 12 hours trying to acclaimate fish that came with a tank I bought. It had extremely high NitrAte readings and from the look of things had been that way for some time (Old Tank Symdrom). I had not formed any sort of attachment to them at the time, but I had to do everything I could to 'ease' them into cleaner and healthier water.

Now I am beginning to get attached to them - I tried really hard to avoid that until I knew that they were going to survive the transistion. I lost of few fish early on due to poor advice and lack of research on my part. I cried each and every time. That is why I try so hard to give them the best possible environment. If they die of anything but old age - I failed them.

All you have to do to become attached is watch them. You will start to see funny little quirks and habits...it makes them individuals not just fish.

Yes, mostly because of how long I've had them..It's bean an uphill battle at times and if there had been another home for them, there's many times I would have given them away if someone had wanted them.

I am! :) I had a really rough start with my tank, not knowing much about cycling, and I've lost lots of fish... but now that I have a happy, healthy tank, I'm really attatched to them. It makes me want to give them the best possible environment.

I'm most attached to our smaller 2 goldfish, not so much to the betta or bigger goldfish. Our smaller 2 goldfish have so much personality and maybe I feel sorry for them because they had such a rough start in life (they're our rescue fish), our betta is pretty and nice but not so much personality, and our biggest goldfish maybe I'm holding a grudge against because he'd badly nipped a little goldfish who later died. Not sure we're keeping him, waiting until the 3 remaining goldfish are closer to the same size before we introduce him to the other 2.
