A story and some questions... read!

first ID the pleco..believe it or not some plecos(catfish) are suitable for a 10 gallon. albeit tht list is pretty small.

please don't assume all plecos get big. I have albino Bn's that don't get much larger that about 3"(females)

are you referring to 'shell dwellers' as lake tanganyika cichlids? it is my understanding that some of these remain pretty small and are suitable for keeping in a 10 gallon.

personally I like a bit larger tanks as they afford more room for creating an environment and can be a bit more stable than a 10.

the thing is if you JUST have the 'shell dwellers' or JUST have the plecos it
might work out but a 10 ga is just not meant to hold a combo of all of those fish.

The pleco wont get much bigger in that setup.. The lack of space will stunt its growth even before it starts to grow.
That is a myth.

The following things can and will happen, though:
-The lack of space can cause the pleco to become sick.
-The lack of space will stunt the growth of the fins of the pleco but the body will continue to grow making it really deformed.
-Or the pleco will just grow. Lack of space be d*amned. It will grow until you can't see the bottom of the tank. (And probably eat any fish small enough to fit into its mouth!)

It will not stop growing and stay stunted, though.

I have seen it personally as I used to work in a LFS and people used to bring in common plecos that outgrew their tanks that looked just like the above. And it doesn't just happen with plecos, either.

Actually it is not a myth. I'm sure everything on your list can happen, but they will stunt sometimes also. When I was a stupid uneducated little kid I kept a common pleco and a goldfish in a 10 gallon for 4 years. The pleco never grew even a little bit.

yes, you do have to deal with compatibility issues. but isn't that why many people come here? for advice ;)

Is it bad that I responded? Perhaps someone else is interested in Chacas and might find the info interesting. I appreciate the input. I will only respond to posts that are only 10 months old from now on. Brin
