Potassium chloride is used to soften our water...

Read somewhere that because the chloride is sent through some part of the water softner and the small amounts left thatit isn't in a high enough concentration to harm fish. Just curious to the descrepancy.

Well, I used prime before but de-chlor was on sale so bought some of that. Besides, prime rids ammonia which the good bacteria need. Anyway, I only asked this info because of what I was reading on a subject thread on a diff web page "Convolutions of pH in Fresh Water Aquariums" as well as other sites and became confused. If I didn't need to buy a dechlor product then what was the sense of spending money on something not needed? One less chemical in the water. However, I don't want to change something with out input from others. Appreciate the thoughts.

Prime does not rid the ammonia that bacteria need. It simply converts it from NH3 to NH4+ (ammonia to ammonium) which the bacteria eat just fine while also making it safer for fish.

ok sorry. That's what I read and interpretted. People are awfully blunt and often quick to jump on others. I never said I was an expert let alone even close to an expert. I fully put out there that I am new to this hobby (can't really count my childhood years as things were done so differently then). I ask for and welcome constructive advice and criticism. What I deplore is being made to feel attacked and on the defensive even while reading someone elses posts. I think maybe I will just quit posting and just research and read and come to my own opinions.

Who exactly is attacking you? If you took my post personally, then I am sorry. I was just letting you know that you don't have to worry about prime killing of the beneficial bacteria. I know the bottle is a little ambiguous when it says it "removes" ammonia. Don't feel like you need to turn away from posting.. This is where I have learned much of what I know about keeping fish.
